When You Should Go To A Dermatology Clinic For A Mole

A mole could be a simple discoloration of a patch of skin, or it could be a sign of something more serious. It may have started out as nothing, but then it changed over time. This is why it is important to keep track of any moles on your body, and see a dermatologist, if you notice anything different. Here are a few signs that something has changed, and you should have it looked at by a professional.

Symmetry

A harmless mole will be symmetrical. If you notice that one half of it looks different than the other, it could be a sign of skin cancer. One side might be larger than the other, or perhaps have a different shape to it. Using a pencil, draw a line through the center of the mole, and see how the different sides align. You should also do this checking both the top and bottom halves of the mole.

Edges

The edges of any mole should be smooth. If the borders change and become irregular, it is time to see a dermatologist. Even if you have tested for symmetry, if the edges are not smooth, there could be a problem.

Size

Benign moles are not normally larger than one centimeter across. While it is uncommon for a mole you have had for a long time to become malignant, it is possible. One of the sings of trouble is a mole that grows. If a new mole appears that is small, it is doubly important to pay attention to its size.

Color

Benign moles are usually of one color. They may have areas of a slightly different shade, but they are not a different color completely. For example, a brown mole that fades in color a bit at the smooth edges should be fine. However, if you notice that there is some red or black on it, make an appointment with a dermatologist.

There are different types of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most serious. Moles are a sign of this type and should not be ignored. You can have a biopsy done of the mole, when you visit a dermatology clinic. It is best to have this done, at the first sign of any change in an existing mole, or one that appears suddenly. Not only will this put your mind at ease, but if there is a problem, the sooner you get treatment, the better the prognosis.
